dark is the night

it is happening. I am painting my bedroom black. okay, not black-black, but it's gettin' dark and sexy in there and I am so excited! I also have like, a million questions...

the top photo is from Lonny, 2nd & 3rd are Jenna Lyon's bedroom (dream!), next is a room by Anne Coyle for the MerchMart, and finally Anna's bedroom (of Door 16). those are just a few examples, but you get what I'm goin' for, right? my room gets like, zero natural light, so I'm just gonna make it the cave it is meant to be and go for it. I plan on installing a new pendant light with a rheostat and I got a new bed frame, so the whole room is getting a much needed mini-makeover. I don't know about you, but my bedroom is always the last space to feel finished...

questions: what color to use?? Anna swears by Benjamin Moore's Soot, which is actually a suuuper deep indigo, and she uses a matte finish. that top image features Benjamin Moore's Wrought Iron, which is a tad lighter and more on the dark charcoal side of the scale. and Daniel has made me a believer in Benjamin Moore's Raccoon Fur, who's name I absolutely love and is closer in tone to Soot, but a touch lighter, and is pictured in that over-the-top room with the pink bed (yikes).

thoughts? suggestions? tips? advice? ....anyone wanna help paint?

RACOON! Hands down, my fave. I hope you incorporate some gilded frames, too!

do you buy wine by the way the label looks?

....sometimes. why do you ask? I love a well-designed label, but I know a bit about wine and can overlook a bad typeface for a spicy, earthy, red that tastes like a barn.

thanks, Alicia!

If you're drawn to the dark-as-night bedrooms, I think you might regret choosing one of the lighter shades. I say go with Soot! I used it our kitchen's wainscoting and love it. It's wonderfully inky.

I used Behr's paint-n-primer "Cracked Pepper" in our dining room and I love it! One good coat plus a few touch-ups totally did the job.

I love using blackboard paint. Use it anywhere and everywhere!

When we went for the dark colors in our apt I was super tempted to do a room in semi-gloss. I'm still wishing I had. What are you thinking about the finish?

hahaha, I said "Martha Steward". typos!

Nice room, but I think light colors will make this more prettier.

Ohmigod, the fourth picture is what I need to do to our kitchen. I painted it Night Shade by Behr (which is blue, not black, but very dark) and I've been struggling to establish a flow from the rest of the apartment. Clearly, I need crazy paintings and a giant fur something. Also, I LOVE that you're going dark - black bedrooms are the best!

I love the paint on the walls in the bedroom with the pink bed.....but I just love the entire vibe of the bedroom, so that might influence my paint choice.

Hi. Is this really your room? It's gorgeous! It looks like a celebrity's bedroom. I love the color back and it's indeed looks very sexy. Is this an apartment?

I'm probably chiming in too late, but I'm a huge fan of Sherwin Williams "Peppercorn," which is another super deep indigo. We used it for our fireplace wall in these pics (and it's actually darker than it looks in the photos), and it goes SO well with our cool-colored accents. It's deep enough to be the real deal, but has just enough lightness to give the slightest hint of color.
