communal castle

it's this time of year when Chicagoans start making plans to escape the city. I actually really like winter, but after all the holiday lights come down and the snow turns into grey sludge...you can't help but day-dream of a little getaway.

my friends and I often joke about starting a commune and I love planning vacations with groups of pals and their kiddos. it's so much fun to hunker down in a mountain cabin or a beachside bungalow, make meals together, and just not do anything at all...

wouldn't you love to spend a week or two in this charming farmhouse in Ireland??

or ya know, maybe a castle is more your style...

okay, I'm taking suggestions: where is your favorite place to spend a long weekend? I want details, people!

I have never been, but several of my friends have gone to New Buffalo, MI for a long weekend. No Ireland but they have lots of wineries, cute stores and cozy restaurants. Plus it is close to Chicago!

I love visiting my family in VA, but usually closer to October so we can go camping & hiking, & then I'm back in Chicago in time to enjoy a REAL Winter. Not this year though, hehe...

The Davenport Hotel in Spokane. My husband and I try to spend a couple of weekends there every year. It's where we spent the first two nights after our wedding before jetting off on our honeymoon :)

Davenport is great! They have great packages that start at $218 that include free parking, a great room, and $100 in dining credit at any of their restaurants!

My favourite place to stay is my sister's house, which is usually in Edinburgh (plenty of shopping opportunities and the zoo for the kids) but she has moved to Hong Kong so we are extending a long weekend to a 9 day visit at Easter. Can not wait! x

Since you're in Chicago, I would check out www.getawaytowisconsin.com

It's the greatest escape just 3 hours outside of the city ~
